Knife attack in a nursery in Brazil: 5 dead, including 3 children
RIO DE JANEIRO | Three toddlers and two daycare workers were killed on Tuesday by an 18-year-old armed with a knife in the southern Brazilian state of Santa Catarina, local police said.
“An 18-year-old man broke into a nursery with a stabbing weapon and attacked children and employees. Two adults and three children died, ”the Military Police said in a statement.
“The perpetrator (of this attack) also turned his knife against him, injuring his neck, abdomen and chest. He was transferred in serious condition to the hospital, ”the text continues.
A fourth child was slightly injured, said Commissioner Jerônimo Marçal Ferreira during a press point in front of the nursery.
Authorities did not specify the age of the victims, but local media reported that the facility accommodated children from six months to two years old.
The attack took place in Saudades, a small town of about 10,000 inhabitants 600 km from Florianopolis, the capital of the state of Santa Catarina.
According to the commissioner, the assailant had no criminal record.
The governor of Santa Catarina, Daniela Reinehr, has declared an official mourning of three days.
The last bloody attack on a school in Brazil dates back to March 2019, when two former students shot and killed eight people before killing themselves at a college in Suzano, in the Sao Paulo region.
The Chapecoense football club, located in Chapeco, 60 km from Saudades, reacted on Twitter: “we are stunned by this tragedy, we lack words to communicate the extent of our pain in the face of such atrocity”.
In 2016, Chapecoense was bereaved by a plane crash that killed 71 people, including 19 players, 14 staff members and around 20 journalists.
